The Seiryoin Soto Zen Temple is located on upland in a hilly area in Motoyoshi district, Kesennuma, which is one of the places damaged during the huge tsunami disaster following the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. The temple became an evacuation site serving many survivors of the disaster. It is one of the associated temples of Tochoji Soto Zen Temple in Tokyo as their “Modern Dual Grave System”.
There is an existing mature Japanese cedar forest in the temple. A new, natural burial ground was constructed in 2016 by cutting a part of the forest as a liner shape toward the Pacific Ocean. The cemetery has two types of groundcover. One is meadow burial ground composed of a Japanese native lawn and vegetation mats. The other is called forest burial ground, where one’s ashes can be buried in the existing Japanese cedar forest. The thinning operation in existing mature forests is expected to provide the forest floor with adequate sunlight so that potential natural vegetation can emerge.
